  • Planting Conditions: Feather Reed Grass thrives in well drained soil, with a preference for sandy, loamy, or clay soils. It is adaptable to a range of soil types but performs best in soil that is not waterlogged. While it tolerates a range of soil fertility, it does not fare well in overly rich soils, as this may cause the plant to flop or become too lush. The grass prefers full sun, which encourages its upright growth and vibrant flower production. It can tolerate some light shade, but planting in full sun ensures that the plant remains strong, compact, and produces the best flowering and colouring in its plumes. It is also relatively low maintenance and drought tolerant once established, making it ideal for gardens that experience dry periods.
  • Growth Rate: Feather Reed Grass has a fast growth rate, reaching its full height quickly in spring and early summer, making it an excellent choice for adding height and structure to the garden.

Feather Reed Ornamental Grasses Description

Feather Reed Grass is a striking and versatile ornamental grass that brings both height and elegance to any garden. Renowned for its tall, upright form, it features feathery, silvery plumes that emerge in early summer, transitioning from a soft pinkish hue to golden tones as they mature. This ornamental grass forms dense, vertical clumps, making it an excellent choice for adding structure and movement to borders, mixed planting beds, and even modern, minimalist garden designs. It is particularly admired for its ability to provide year round interest, as the attractive flower heads remain throughout autumn and winter, adding texture and contrast to the winter garden.

Pruning Advice

Cut Back in Spring: To maintain a tidy appearance and encourage fresh growth, cut back the foliage in early spring, before the new shoots emerge. Remove any dead or damaged stems, and trim the remaining foliage to a few inches above the ground. This will allow room for the new, vibrant growth to appear.

Autumn and Winter Interest: While it is generally advisable to cut back the plant in spring, you may choose to leave the seed heads standing through the winter for added winter interest. The dried plumes often remain attractive in frost or snow, and they can provide food for birds during colder months.

Division: Every few years, you can divide the plant to keep it healthy and vigorous. Divide in early spring or autumn, particularly if the clump has become too large or overcrowded. Dividing also provides an opportunity for propagation.

Further Information

Vertical Structure: The tall, upright habit of Feather Reed Grass adds a striking vertical element to garden designs, ideal for providing height in mixed borders, large planting schemes, or as a feature plant in more minimalist designs.

Seasonal Interest: The feathery plumes are a standout feature, changing colour throughout the seasons. Starting with a soft pink or purple in early summer, the plumes mature to golden hues that persist into autumn and even winter, creating long lasting ornamental interest.

Low Maintenance: Feather Reed Grass is relatively low maintenance once established. It requires minimal care beyond occasional pruning and benefits from being a hardy, disease resistant plant that thrives in a variety of growing conditions.

Wildlife Friendly: The feathery seed heads attract birds and beneficial insects, adding ecological value to the garden. They also provide shelter for small creatures during the winter months.

Hardy and Durable: This grass is particularly valued for its hardiness and ability to withstand both cold winters and dry spells, making it an excellent choice for a variety of climates and garden types.
