Photinia Red Robin Plant Description

For year-round interest in your garden, Photinia Red Robin is an excellent choice. In spring, it showcases clusters of delicate white flowers and vivid scarlet leaves, which transform into striking deep green foliage by winter, making it a prominent feature in any garden.

Although Photinia Red Robin is not an overly dense shrub, its evergreen nature and relatively large leaves provide a good level of privacy. It grows at an average rate of 30 cm per year and can be easily maintained at a height of up to 4 metres. It can be trimmed into a formal hedge shape in spring or summer or maintained informally with occasional light trimming as required.

Photinia thrives best in sunny conditions but also grows well in partial shade and prefers well-drained soil. It is resilient to frost, although young plants should be protected during the winter months.

It is worth noting that Photinia Red Robin may occasionally experience leaf drop. Should this occur, prune the affected areas and apply a slow-release fertiliser in the spring, ensuring adequate watering as necessary. With proper care, vigorous and vibrant regrowth can be expected.

For a more compact version, consider Photinia Little Red Robin, which offers the same stunning appearance in a smaller, low-growing form.

Pruning Advice

Photinia should be pruned into a formal hedge shape in late winter and early spring, or it may be left in a more informal state, with height and width reductions carried out as necessary.
