Ginkgo Ornamental Tree Description

The Ginkgo, often referred to as the Maidenhair Tree, is a distinctive and ancient deciduous tree valued for its unique fan-shaped leaves and striking golden autumn colour. As one of the oldest living tree species, with a history dating back over 200 million years, the Ginkgo is a true botanical marvel. Typically growing to a height of 20–35 metres (65–115 feet) and spreading 8–12 metres (26–39 feet), it is well-suited for large gardens, parks, and urban settings. Its resilient nature and beautiful foliage make it a popular choice among gardeners and landscapers.

The Ginkgo's leaves are distinctively shaped, resembling a fan, and have a vibrant green colour during the growing season. In autumn, the leaves transform into a stunning golden yellow, creating a breathtaking spectacle that adds warmth and colour to any landscape. The tree's bark is smooth and grey, providing additional visual interest throughout the year.

In spring, Ginkgo trees produce small, inconspicuous flowers. While Ginkgo trees are dioecious (having male and female trees), the male trees are preferred in ornamental settings due to the unpleasant odour produced by the female trees’ fruit, which resembles a ginkgo nut.

Pruning Advice

Pruning is important for maintaining the shape and health of the Ginkgo tree. The best time to prune is during late winter or early spring before new growth begins. During this time, remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches to enhance air circulation and promote healthy growth.

Ginkgo trees generally require minimal pruning, as they have a naturally elegant form. However, if shaping is desired, light pruning can be done to maintain the tree’s aesthetic appeal. Avoid excessive pruning, as this can stress the tree and impact its overall health.

Further Information

Ornamental Value: The Ginkgo is renowned for its unique leaf shape and vibrant autumn colour, making it a striking focal point in any garden or landscape. Its upright growth habit and symmetrical form contribute to its aesthetic appeal.

Air Quality Improvement: As a hardy tree, the Ginkgo is highly effective at improving air quality, as it absorbs pollutants and produces oxygen, contributing to a healthier environment.

Drought and Pollution Tolerance: Ginkgo trees are remarkably tolerant of urban pollution and can withstand drought conditions once established, making them ideal for urban settings.

Wildlife Support: The tree's leaves provide habitat for various insects, and its flowers attract pollinators in spring. However, the primary wildlife benefit comes from the male trees, as they do not produce the foul-smelling fruit.
