Ceanothus Hedge Plants Description
Native to North America, Ceanothus hedges add vibrant colour to your garden, with striking dark green foliage providing year-round cover when not in bloom. Best suited to fertile, well-drained soils, this low-maintenance shrub typically grows between 20 to 40 cm per year.
Ceanothus is known for its spreading growth habit and should be planted with sufficient space to accommodate its expansion. It thrives when trained against a wall and positioned in a sheltered, sunny location. It is important to protect it from strong, cold winds, which can damage the plant.
Ceanothus hedge plants are available throughout the year.
Pruning Advice
Ceanothus hedge trimming is best carried out in spring. To promote flowering and maintain a manageable size, trim back between one-third and one-half of the previous season’s growth.
Further Information
You will find our recommended planting densities for each pot size listed alongside the products. We advise using these recommendations as a guide, taking into account how long you are prepared to wait for your hedge to mature. For pot-grown plants, such as our Ceanothus range, the following planting densities are suggested:
For 2-litre pots: Planting 3 per metre is ideal, though you may opt for as few as 1 per metre or as many as 5 per metre (in a double staggered row) for a quicker establishment.
For 5-litre pots: A recommended density is 2 per metre, though planting 1 per metre is acceptable or 3 per metre if staggered in a double row.
For other pot sizes, please use the above guide to estimate planting density or contact us for personalised advice. Additionally, for taller, more expensive plants, it is not necessary to adhere strictly to the exact numbers. Planting 1.5 per metre (2 plants every 3 metres) is perfectly acceptable if you are unsure whether to choose 1 or 2 plants per metre.
