Ceanothus Hedge Plants Description

Native to North America, Ceanothus, commonly known as Californian Lilac, is a popular evergreen flowering hedge that combines dense year-round foliage with masses of vibrant blue flowers during late spring and early summer. Its compact branching habit creates an attractive informal hedge that provides colour, privacy and shelter throughout the seasons.

Ceanothus performs best in fertile, well-drained soil and a sheltered position in full sun, where flowering is at its most impressive. It naturally develops a broad, spreading habit, making it ideal for garden boundaries, wildlife-friendly hedges and coastal gardens thanks to its excellent tolerance of salty air once established.

Growing around 20–40cm each year, Californian Lilac is relatively low maintenance and responds well to annual pruning after flowering. Its nectar-rich blooms attract bees, butterflies and other beneficial pollinators, making it an excellent choice for biodiversity while providing evergreen screening for your garden.

Pruning Advice

Ceanothus hedge trimming is best carried out in spring. To promote flowering and maintain a manageable size, trim back between one-third and one-half of the previous season’s growth.

Ceanothus is easy to maintain with light annual pruning.

After Flowering: Trim immediately after flowering to maintain a neat, bushy shape while encouraging strong flowering growth for the following year.

Avoid Hard Pruning: Evergreen Ceanothus does not regenerate reliably from old wood, so avoid cutting back into mature stems. Instead, remove only the previous season's growth where required.

Remove Damaged Growth: Cut out any dead, damaged or crossing branches in spring to improve airflow and maintain plant health.

General Maintenance: Water regularly while establishing, particularly during prolonged dry periods, and apply a spring mulch to help retain moisture and support healthy growth.

Further Information

Retain the existing planting density information, as it is valuable for customers making purchasing decisions, but add the following introductory section above it.

Why Choose Californian Lilac (Ceanothus)?

  • Evergreen Privacy: Provides dense year-round screening with attractive glossy foliage.
  • Spectacular Blue Flowers: Produces abundant fragrant blooms in late spring and early summer.
  • Excellent for Coastal Gardens: Performs well in sheltered coastal locations with good drainage.
  • Pollinator Friendly: Rich in nectar, attracting bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects.
  • Low Maintenance: Requires only light annual pruning once established.
  • Ideal for Informal Hedges: Perfect for flowering boundaries, wildlife gardens and decorative screening.

You will find our recommended planting densities for each pot size listed alongside the products. We advise using these recommendations as a guide, taking into account how long you are prepared to wait for your hedge to mature. For pot-grown plants, such as our Ceanothus range, the following planting densities are suggested:

For 2-litre pots: Planting 3 per metre is ideal, though you may opt for as few as 1 per metre or as many as 5 per metre (in a double staggered row) for quicker establishment.

For 5-litre pots: A recommended density is 2 per metre, though planting 1 per metre is acceptable or 3 per metre if staggered in a double row.

For other pot sizes, please use the above guide to estimate planting density or contact us for personalised advice. Additionally, for taller, more expensive plants, it is not necessary to adhere strictly to the exact numbers. Planting 1.5 per metre (2 plants every 3 metres) is perfectly acceptable if you are unsure whether to choose 1 or 2 plants per metre.
