Brachyglottis (Senecio) Hedge Plants Description

Brachyglottis Hedge Plants (commonly known as Senecio) are an excellent choice for gardeners seeking a low-maintenance, drought-tolerant hedge with year-round interest. Known for their striking foliage and adaptability, Brachyglottis are well-suited for coastal regions and exposed sites, making them popular in UK gardens.

Brachyglottis plants have a moderate growth rate, typically achieving 20-30cm (8-12 inches) per year, and can reach a maximum height of 1.5 metres (5 feet). Their compact, bushy growth habit makes them ideal for small to medium hedges.

Foliage: The most distinguishing feature of Brachyglottis is its silver-grey, felted leaves, which provide a unique texture and colour contrast in the garden. The leaves are oval-shaped and slightly waxy, helping the plant retain moisture in dry conditions.

Flowers: In summer, Brachyglottis produces bright yellow, daisy-like flowers that stand out against the silvery foliage. These flowers are a favourite of pollinators such as bees.

Shape: This hedge plant forms a neat, rounded shape that requires minimal trimming to maintain its compact, tidy appearance.

Brachyglottis thrives in well-drained soil and prefers full sun, though it can tolerate light shade. Its natural resilience to coastal winds and salt spray makes it an ideal choice for coastal gardens, while its drought tolerance means it performs well in dry, exposed locations.

Brachyglottis hedging is perfect for creating a soft, decorative boundary, or as an ornamental feature in mixed planting schemes. With its attractive foliage, bright summer flowers, and easy-care nature, it provides year-round appeal and structure to the landscape.

Pruning Advice

Brachyglottis 'Sunshine' should be pruned once after flowering to maintain a bushy shape. For optimal results, most evergreen shrubs can be pruned just before new growth begins in mid-spring. For additional options, please explore our complete range of flowering hedge plants.

Further Information

Brachyglottis thrives in a sunny position but also performs well in light shade. It is hardy and adaptable to various soil types, except for very wet or poorly-draining soils. Additionally, it is drought-tolerant and suitable for windswept areas.
