Heidebraut Purple Moor Ornamental Grasses Description
Heidebraut Purple Moor Grass is a graceful and compact ornamental grass, valued for its fine textured foliage and airy flower plumes. This cultivar forms a neat, upright clump of green leaves that gradually transition to golden yellow hues in the autumn, providing a warm and vibrant display through the cooler months. In late summer, it produces slender, purple tinged flower spikes that stand tall above the foliage. These flower heads mature into soft golden brown plumes, which continue to add texture and interest throughout the winter.
With a mature height of around 1 metre (3 feet), Heidebraut is a more compact form of Molinia caerulea, making it an excellent choice for smaller gardens, borders, or areas with limited space. Its elegant form and seasonal interest make it a versatile addition to both contemporary and traditional planting schemes, especially in naturalistic settings or around water features.
Pruning Advice
When to Prune: Prune Heidebraut in late winter or early spring, just before the new growth starts. This ensures the plant is ready to regenerate and encourages strong new growth.
How to Prune: Cut the foliage back to around 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6 inches) above the ground using sharp secateurs or garden shears. Be sure not to cut into the crown, as this can damage the plant.
Additional Tips:
Leaving the dried flower heads over winter provides additional winter interest and shelter for wildlife.
Divide clumps every 3 to 4 years to maintain its vigour and prevent overcrowding. The best time to divide is in early spring, just before the new growth appears.
A light mulch in spring can help retain moisture and suppress weeds, especially in the early growing season.
Further Information
Compact Size: Heidebraut is a smaller, more compact variety of Molinia, making it ideal for smaller gardens or more contained spaces where a taller grass may be overwhelming.
Seasonal Interest: Its green foliage turns golden yellow in autumn, and its soft purple flower plumes mature to golden brown, offering long lasting visual interest from summer through to winter.
Low Maintenance: This grass is easy to care for once established. It requires minimal attention, making it an excellent choice for low maintenance gardens.
Wildlife Friendly: The delicate flowers attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies, while the dried flower heads provide shelter and food for birds during the colder months.
Aesthetic Appeal: With its fine foliage and graceful flowers, Heidebraut adds texture, movement, and a soft, natural look to the garden. It works particularly well in wildflower meadows, alongside water features, or in damp garden areas.
