Blue Fescue Ornamental Grasses Description
Blue Fescue is a compact and striking ornamental grass, prized for its fine, silvery blue foliage that forms neat, mounding clumps. With its graceful, spiky texture, it adds a touch of elegance and year round interest to gardens, especially in sunny, well drained spots. In late spring or early summer, slender flower spikes rise above the foliage, producing small, inconspicuous flowers in shades of light brown or beige. These provide a subtle contrast to the vibrant blue leaves, which retain their colour throughout the year.
Pruning Advice
Cutting Back: To maintain a tidy appearance and encourage fresh growth, cut back the old foliage in early spring before new growth begins. Trim back to about 5 cm (2 inches) from the base of the plant. This will also help remove any damaged or browned foliage from the winter.
Deadheading: The flowers are relatively inconspicuous, so there is no need for regular deadheading. If desired, the flower spikes can be cut back after flowering to maintain its tidy look.
Division: Blue Fescue can become slightly overcrowded after a few years. Divide the clumps in early spring or autumn to rejuvenate the plant and prevent overcrowding.
General Maintenance: Blue Fescue is a low maintenance grass, but you can remove any yellowing or damaged leaves during the growing season to keep the plant looking its best. Ensure it receives adequate water during dry spells, especially when newly planted.
Further Information
Year Round Interest: Its attractive blue foliage provides consistent colour and structure, even in winter, making it a great choice for adding texture to garden borders or containers.
Compact Size: With a modest height of 20 to 30 cm (8 to 12 inches), Blue Fescue is perfect for smaller gardens, rockeries, or front of border plantings, where it will not overwhelm other plants.
Low Maintenance: This hardy grass is easy to care for once established, requiring minimal attention beyond basic maintenance. It is an excellent choice for low maintenance and drought tolerant gardens.
Wildlife Friendly: While the flowers are not showy, Blue Fescue still provides valuable habitat and food for pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
Versatility: Suitable for a variety of planting schemes, Blue Fescue works well in rock gardens, dry borders, gravel gardens, and container planting. Its evergreen nature also makes it ideal for adding structure during the colder months when many other plants are dormant.
