Weigela florida Variegata Description

Weigela florida Variegata is a striking deciduous shrub known for its beautiful, variegated foliage and charming, bell-shaped flowers. This compact shrub features green leaves edged with creamy-white margins, which provide year-round interest. In late spring and early summer, 'Variegata' produces an abundance of soft pink, trumpet-shaped flowers, attracting bees and other pollinators. With its neat, mounded habit, it is perfect for adding a splash of colour to borders, mixed beds, or containers, and works well in small or medium-sized gardens.

Benefits:

Variegated foliage: The creamy-white-edged leaves add visual interest even when the plant is not in bloom, making it attractive throughout the growing season.

Beautiful flowers: In late spring and early summer, clusters of pale pink, trumpet-shaped flowers appear, providing a lovely contrast against the variegated leaves. These blooms are a magnet for pollinators, making it a great addition to wildlife-friendly gardens.

Compact growth: Weigela Variegata has a manageable size, making it suitable for smaller gardens, containers, or as part of a mixed border.

Adaptability: This shrub is relatively easy to grow and thrives in a variety of soil types, as long as they are well-drained. It is also tolerant of urban pollution, making it a great choice for city gardens.

Planting Conditions:

Soil: Well-drained soil; it prefers fertile, moist, but not waterlogged conditions.

Sunlight: Grows best in full sun, which helps promote the best flowering and foliage colour. It can tolerate light shade, but flowering may be reduced.

Watering: Water regularly in its first season to establish a good root system. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant.

Pruning Advice

To maintain the shape and health of Weigela florida Variegata, pruning is best done after the flowering period, usually in mid to late summer. Remove any dead, damaged, or diseased branches, and cut back spent flowers to encourage a second flush of blooms. If the shrub has become leggy or overgrown, remove one-third of the oldest stems down to ground level to encourage new growth from the base. Avoid heavy pruning in autumn or winter, as this may reduce flowering in the following season.

Weigela Variegata is a low-maintenance, versatile shrub that brings year-round interest with its attractive foliage and abundant blooms, making it an excellent choice for enhancing the beauty and biodiversity of your garden.

Further Information

Planting distances are largely a matter of preference. For bare root plants, spacing them at 3 plants per meter is sufficient, 5 plants is optimal, and 7 plants in a double staggered row will result in a denser hedge more quickly. Generally, smaller plants should be planted at a higher density. For cell-grown plants, spacing at 4 plants per meter in a single row or ideally 6 plants per meter in a staggered row is recommended.
