Chinese Silver Ornamental Grasses Description

Chinese Silver Grass is an elegant and versatile ornamental grass that brings height, movement, and year round interest to a garden. Its tall, arching foliage forms graceful clumps of slender, green leaves often marked with a silver midrib. In late summer to autumn, it produces feathery plumes that rise above the foliage, initially appearing silvery or pink tinted before maturing to a soft golden brown. These attractive flower heads persist through the winter, offering structural interest and texture even in colder months.

Pruning Advice

Cutting Back: In late winter or early spring, before new growth begins, cut back the foliage and flower stems to about 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6 inches) from the ground. This helps rejuvenate the plant and makes way for fresh growth.

Dividing: Every few years, divide the clumps in early spring to maintain vigour and prevent overcrowding. This is also an excellent way to propagate the plant.

Further Information

Architectural Appeal: With its tall, fountain like form, Chinese Silver Grass provides a stunning vertical element in borders and makes an eye catching specimen plant.

Seasonal Interest: The plumes and foliage evolve in colour throughout the year, transitioning from fresh green to shades of bronze, red, and golden tones in autumn. The dried plumes remain attractive during winter, adding interest to frosty landscapes.

Wildlife Friendly: The flower plumes attract pollinators, while the dense foliage provides shelter for wildlife.

Low Maintenance: This grass is hardy, drought tolerant once established, and requires minimal care. It is also resistant to pests and diseases.

Erosion Control: Its strong, fibrous root system helps stabilise soil, making it useful in preventing erosion on slopes.
