Tufted Hair Ornamental Grasses Description

Tufted Hair Grass is a striking and versatile ornamental grass, valued for its delicate, feathery flower heads and clump forming habit. This hardy perennial produces fine, arching green foliage that serves as a soft backdrop to the airy, shimmering blooms that appear in summer. The flower heads, in golden or silvery hues, create an elegant, light catching display that lasts into autumn, adding texture, movement, and seasonal interest to the garden.

This grass is an excellent choice for borders, naturalistic planting schemes, and wildlife friendly gardens. Its ability to thrive in damp or partially shaded areas makes it particularly useful for challenging spots, while its graceful form and subtle beauty enhance any garden style.

Pruning Advice

Cutting Back: In late winter or early spring, cut back old flower stems and any dead or damaged foliage to ground level. This clears space for fresh growth and keeps the plant looking tidy.

Deadheading: The flowerheads can be left in place to mature into decorative seed heads for winter interest, or removed in late summer for a neater appearance.

Division: Every 2 to 3 years, divide the clumps in spring or early autumn to rejuvenate the plant, prevent overcrowding, and propagate new plants.

General Maintenance: Remove yellowing or damaged leaves throughout the growing season to maintain its appearance.

Further Information

Seasonal Interest: The golden or silvery flowerheads provide a long lasting display from summer into autumn, adding movement and a soft, shimmering quality to the garden.

Wildlife Value: The flowers attract pollinators such as bees, while the grass provides cover for insects and other small wildlife.

Low Maintenance: Once established, Tufted Hair Grass requires minimal care, making it a practical yet beautiful choice for gardeners.

Versatility: Thrives in a variety of conditions, including damp areas, and works well in formal borders, informal meadows, or as part of a wildlife friendly planting scheme.

Erosion Control: Its dense, fibrous roots help stabilise soil, making it a great option for sloped or erosion prone areas.
