Monterey Cypress Golden Crest Hedge Plants Description

Monterey Cypress Golden Crest is an elegant evergreen shrub distinguished by its striking golden-yellow foliage that adds a warm and vibrant touch to any landscape. Its dense, feather-like branches form a compact, conical shape, making it an excellent choice for formal hedges and architectural accents. This shrub can reach a height of up to 2 to 3 metres and a spread of approximately 1.5 to 2 metres, providing a substantial presence in garden settings.

Growth Rate: The Golden Crest variety exhibits a moderate growth rate, typically adding 15 to 30 centimetres of new growth per year under optimal conditions. It prefers well-drained soil and a sunny position, though it is adaptable to various soil types and tolerates coastal conditions.

Pruning Advice:

Prune in late spring or early summer, after the risk of frost has passed, to maintain the desired shape and ensure healthy growth.

Regular light pruning helps to keep the plant’s form tidy and encourages denser growth. Trim the tips of the branches and remove any errant or excessively long shoots.

If the shrub becomes overgrown or develops a sparse appearance, it can withstand more severe pruning. Cut back up to one third of its size during the dormant season to rejuvenate the plant and stimulate new growth.

Consistent pruning will help maintain the aesthetic appeal and structural integrity of Monterey Cypress Golden Crest, ensuring it remains a standout feature in the garden.

Further Information

Planting distances are largely a matter of preference. For bare root plants, spacing them at 3 plants per meter is sufficient, 5 plants is optimal, and 7 plants in a double staggered row will result in a denser hedge more quickly. Generally, smaller plants should be planted at a higher density. For cell-grown plants, spacing at 4 plants per meter in a single row or ideally 6 plants per meter in a staggered row is recommended.
