Golden Leylandii Hedge Plant Description

Golden Leylandii (Cupressus × leylandii Castlewellan Gold) is a fast-growing, evergreen conifer known for its striking golden-yellow foliage. This hedge plant provides year-round colour and dense coverage, making it ideal for creating tall, formal hedges or effective privacy screens. The bright, feathery foliage turns a deeper golden bronze during winter, adding seasonal interest to your garden. It is particularly popular for its rapid growth and ability to establish a hedge quickly.

Golden Leylandii has a fast growth rate, typically growing up to 75 centimetres per year. It can reach a height of 8 to 12 metres if left unpruned, but regular maintenance will keep it at the desired height. This variety thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained soils, though it is adaptable to various soil types. Its dense structure makes it highly effective at blocking wind, reducing noise, and providing privacy.

Pruning Advice

Golden Leylandii should be pruned twice a year, with the best times being in late spring and late summer. Regular pruning helps maintain the desired height and encourages dense, compact growth. Use sharp shears to lightly trim back the new growth, avoiding cutting into old wood, as Leylandii does not regenerate well from this. Keeping up with annual pruning will prevent the hedge from becoming overgrown and ensure a tidy, formal appearance.

Planting distances are largely a matter of preference. For bare root plants, spacing them at 3 plants per meter is sufficient, 5 plants is optimal, and 7 plants in a double staggered row will result in a denser hedge more quickly. Generally, smaller plants should be planted at a higher density. For cell-grown plants, spacing at 4 plants per meter in a single row or ideally 6 plants per meter in a staggered row is recommended.
