Red Barberry Hedging Plants Description

Berberis ottawensis x Auricoma is a hardy variety that thrives in virtually any soil, including coastal gardens. This plant features vivid red leaves throughout spring and summer, which turn into a fiery display in autumn before shedding for winter (Purple Beech is a comparable option for similar dark foliage). It produces orange berries in spring. Berberis flowers on old wood, so it should be pruned shortly after flowering to allow new growth to develop in time for the following season. Remove approximately one-third of the older shoots at the base.

For more detailed information on this species, please refer to our ultimate guide to Berberis hedging plants. Due to the prickly or thorny nature of Berberis, it is also considered an ideal security hedge, effectively deterring intruders and protecting property boundaries. For alternative security hedges to Berberis, please visit our Intruder Proof Hedging page.

Berberis Red Leaf plants are available for purchase throughout the year. We also stock Purple Leaf Barberry and a wide selection of colourful, prickly hedges with berries. Additionally, see our range of evergreen hedging plants for those seeking year-round cover. del

Pruning Advice

Berberis ottawensis hedge trimming should be done immediately after flowering.

Further Information

Our recommended planting densities for each size and root type are listed in the product grid. These should be used as a guide when considering the time you are willing to wait for your hedge to achieve its full appearance. As a general indication, bare root plants can be spaced at 3 to 7 per metre, while cell-grown plants can be spaced between 4 and 6 per metre. For higher densities, consider planting in a double staggered row or a zig-zag pattern.
