Pruning Advice

Escallonia ‘Apple Blossom’ is a popular evergreen hedge plant valued for its glossy foliage, dense growth and attractive pink flowers. The trumpet-shaped blooms provide colour from late spring through summer, while the evergreen leaves help maintain structure throughout the year.

This versatile Escallonia is suitable for creating colourful garden hedges, informal boundaries and attractive borders. It grows well in full sun or partial shade and tolerates a range of soil types, including normal, chalk and clay soils.

With an average growth rate of approximately 20–40cm per year, Escallonia ‘Apple Blossom’ can be maintained at a height of around 1–2.5 metres with regular pruning.

Prune Escallonia ‘Apple Blossom’ after flowering, usually in late summer or early autumn. Light trimming helps maintain the desired height and shape while encouraging dense, healthy growth.

Remove dead, damaged or overcrowded branches and shorten long shoots that extend beyond the main shape of the hedge. Avoid excessive pruning into old wood, as this can reduce regrowth.

For established Escallonia hedge plants, regular light pruning is generally preferable to heavy cutting, particularly when you want to maintain flowering.

Planting Density

The ideal spacing for Escallonia hedge plants depends on the plant size, root type and how quickly you want the hedge to become dense.

For bare root plants, approximately 3 plants per metre is sufficient, 5 plants per metre is optimal, while 7 plants per metre in a double staggered row can create a denser hedge more quickly.

For cell-grown plants, approximately 4 plants per metre in a single row or 6 plants per metre in a staggered row is recommended.

Smaller plants can generally be planted at a higher density. Always check the planting guidance provided with your selected product before planting.
