Honeysuckle Baggesens Gold Hedge Plant Description

Honeysuckle Baggesens Gold is a striking, evergreen shrub that adds a vibrant touch to any garden. Known for its golden-yellow, finely textured foliage, it creates a soft, glowing effect, especially when planted in full sun. This dense, bushy plant is ideal for forming neat, low hedges or borders, growing up to 1.5m in height and spread. It responds well to pruning, making it easy to shape into formal or more relaxed forms. Baggesens Gold thrives in well-drained soil and is tolerant of both shade and coastal conditions. It is a hardy choice, bringing year-round interest and a lovely contrast to darker greens in your garden.

Pruning Advice

Honeysuckle Baggesens Gold is a versatile and easy-to-maintain plant that responds well to pruning, making it ideal for shaping into hedges, topiary, or as a feature plant. For best results, prune it in late spring to early summer, after the risk of frost has passed. Regular trimming encourages dense growth and maintains its compact, bushy shape.

Light Pruning: For minor shaping and maintenance, trim the tips of new growth to keep the hedge tidy and encourage more branching.

Hard Pruning: If the plant becomes overgrown or leggy, it can tolerate a harder prune, cutting back by up to a third of its size. This will stimulate fresh growth and reinvigorate the plant.

Tools: Use sharp, clean shears to avoid damaging the branches. Hedge trimmers are also effective for larger hedges.

Make sure to prune regularly during the growing season to maintain the desired shape, as Baggesens Gold can grow quickly if left unchecked. However, avoid pruning too late in the season, as this can expose the plant to frost damage.

Further Information

Planting distances are largely a matter of preference. For bare root plants, spacing them at 3 plants per meter is sufficient, 5 plants is optimal, and 7 plants in a double staggered row will result in a denser hedge more quickly. Generally, smaller plants should be planted at a higher density. For cell-grown plants, spacing at 4 plants per meter in a single row or ideally 6 plants per meter in a staggered row is recommended.
