Dogwoods are primarily cultivated for their strikingly coloured stems, which provide a vibrant display in autumn and winter. We offer several varieties, all sharing similar characteristics: creamy white flowers in spring, followed by blue or white berries, oval dark green leaves that turn red in autumn, and eventually fall to reveal the stunningly coloured stems. These plants complement other species in a mixed hedge or can stand alone as a focal point. Dogwoods are highly resilient, thriving in sunny locations or partial shade, particularly in moist environments. They are also effective in front of evergreen hedges, where nutrients, water, and sunlight are often limited. Robins and mistle thrushes are particularly attracted to the berries in late summer and early autumn.

To achieve the most vibrant stem colours, Dogwoods should be managed with a specific approach. Avoid pruning in the first year. Thereafter, before new buds appear (February or March), cut the plant back to a woody base within 4 inches of the ground annually. Ensure proper feeding and watering to encourage bright new shoots. Older plants can be revitalised by removing the aged wood from the centre of the plant.
