Forsythia Hedge Plants Description

Forsythia Hedge Plants are renowned for their stunning early spring display of bright yellow flowers, making them a popular choice for ornamental hedging in UK gardens. This fast-growing, deciduous shrub brings a burst of colour to the garden when many other plants are still dormant.

Forsythia is a fast-growing hedge plant, with an annual growth rate of 30-60cm (12-24 inches). It can reach heights of 2-3 metres (6-10 feet), making it ideal for medium to tall hedges.

Flowers: The standout feature of Forsythia is its masses of vibrant yellow flowers, which appear in early spring (March to April) before the leaves emerge. The flowers grow along the length of bare stems, creating a dramatic and cheerful display at the start of the gardening season.

Foliage: After the flowering period, Forsythia produces bright green, lance-shaped leaves that create a lush, dense hedge through the summer months. In autumn, the leaves turn golden-yellow before falling.

Shape: Forsythia has an upright growth habit with arching branches, which can be pruned to create a more formal hedge or left to grow in its natural, free-flowing shape for an informal screen.

Pruning Advice

Forsythia thrives in well-drained soils and prefers full sun to ensure the best flowering display, although it can tolerate light shade. It is a hardy plant that performs well in the UK climate, tolerating cold winters and requiring minimal maintenance aside from annual pruning after flowering to keep it neat.

Forsythia is an excellent choice for a colourful, low-maintenance hedge that provides dramatic seasonal interest. Its early blooming flowers make it a favourite for gardeners looking to bring a burst of spring cheer to their outdoor space.

Further Information

Planting distances are largely a matter of preference. For bare root plants, spacing them at 3 plants per metre is sufficient, 5 plants is optimal, and 7 plants in a double staggered row will result in a denser hedge more quickly. Generally, smaller plants should be planted at a higher density. For cell-grown plants, spacing at 4 plants per metre in a single row or ideally 6 plants per metre in a staggered row is recommended.
