It is adaptable to various soil types, including sandy, loamy, or clay soils, as long as they remain well drained. The plant is relatively drought tolerant once established but performs best with consistent moisture, particularly during dry spells. It prefers full sun to partial shade; while full sun enhances the vibrant foliage colour, it can tolerate partial shade, especially in warmer climates, where some shade helps prevent scorching of the leaves.

Pheasant Tail Ornamental Grasses Description

Pheasant Tail Grass, also known as New Zealand Wind Grass, is a striking ornamental grass prized for its graceful, arching foliage and vibrant seasonal colour changes. Native to New Zealand, this hardy, evergreen perennial adds a soft, feathery texture to gardens, especially when planted in drifts or borders. Its slender, linear leaves start green but gradually turn shades of bronze, orange, and red, creating a dynamic display throughout the year. As the foliage sways gently in the wind, it brings movement and lightness to the landscape, making it an excellent choice for adding interest to both formal and informal gardens.

Pruning Advice

Pheasant Tail Grass is a relatively low maintenance plant, but some light pruning will help maintain its shape and encourage fresh growth.

Cut back the plant in early spring, before new growth begins. Remove any dead, damaged, or faded foliage from the previous year to allow space for the new shoots to emerge.

The plant can be divided every few years in early spring if it becomes too large or overcrowded, or if you want to propagate new plants.

In late summer or autumn, you can remove any spent flower spikes to maintain a tidy appearance, although the flowers themselves are not the main ornamental feature.

Further Information

Vibrant Seasonal Colour: One of the key attractions of Pheasant Tail Grass is the stunning transformation of its foliage. The leaves emerge in a fresh green, but as the season progresses, they take on rich hues of bronze, orange, and red, providing year round interest.

Graceful Texture: The plant has fine, arching foliage and adds a soft, airy texture to garden designs, which works beautifully in borders, meadow gardens, and naturalistic plantings.

Low Maintenance: This grass is relatively low maintenance and requires minimal care once established. It is perfect for those seeking a hardy, easy care plant that still offers dramatic visual impact.

Wildlife Friendly: The feathery flower spikes, which appear in late summer, attract pollinators like bees and butterflies, contributing to a healthy garden ecosystem.

Versatile Design Element: Its upright, clumping habit makes it ideal for use in borders, mixed beds, or containers, while its elegant form and colour make it a suitable choice for adding texture and contrast in both modern and traditional garden settings.
