Wavy Hair Ornamental Grasses Description

Wavy Hair Grass is a refined and elegant ornamental grass, valued for its delicate, fine textured foliage and wavy, airy flowerheads. This graceful grass forms compact clumps of thin, arching green leaves, which give way to soft, bronze or golden flowerheads in late spring to summer. The flowers sway gently in the breeze, creating a shimmering effect that lasts well into autumn, adding texture, movement, and seasonal interest to the garden.

Ideal for naturalistic planting schemes, woodland borders, and shaded areas, Wavy Hair Grass thrives in a range of conditions, including partial shade to full sun. It is particularly suited for adding a light, airy feel to shaded gardens or mixed plantings, making it a valuable addition to areas where other plants may struggle to grow.

Pruning Advice

Cutting Back: In late winter or early spring, before new growth emerges, cut back old flowerheads and any damaged or dead foliage to ground level. This helps to tidy the plant and make space for fresh growth.

Deadheading: You can remove the spent flowerheads in late summer or leave them for winter interest. Leaving the seed heads can provide structure and food for wildlife.

Division: Every 2 to 3 years, divide the clumps in spring or autumn to prevent overcrowding, rejuvenate the plant, and propagate new plants.

General Maintenance: Remove any yellowing or damaged leaves throughout the growing season to maintain its tidy appearance.

Further Information

Elegant Aesthetic: The fine, wiry foliage and soft, wavy flowerheads create a graceful, airy effect in gardens, making it a perfect choice for borders or as a backdrop for other plants.

Extended Interest: The flowers bloom in summer and persist into autumn, offering long lasting seasonal interest and contributing to a dynamic garden aesthetic.

Low Maintenance: Once established, Wavy Hair Grass is very low maintenance and requires little care, making it a practical and beautiful addition to any garden.

Wildlife Friendly: The feathery flowers attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies, adding ecological value to your garden.

Versatile Growing Conditions: Thrives in a range of conditions, from partial shade to full sun, and performs well in moist, well drained soils. This makes it a great choice for both sunny borders and shaded woodland settings.
