Karl Foerster Moor Ornamental Grasses Description

Karl Foerster Moor Grass is a stately and elegant ornamental grass, renowned for its upright, clump forming habit and striking flower plumes. Its narrow, arching green foliage forms a graceful mound, providing structure and texture to borders and naturalistic planting schemes. In late summer, tall, feathery flower stems emerge, rising well above the foliage to create a vertical accent. These golden brown plumes persist into winter, maturing to a soft tan colour, and add yearround interest, especially when dusted with frost.

Reaching heights of up to 2 metres (6 feet) when in flower, with a spread of 0.6 to 1 metre (2 to 3 feet), Karl Foerster Moor Grass is ideal for creating vertical interest in mixed borders, alongside ponds, or as part of a naturalistic or prairie style garden. This grass thrives in moist, well drained soils and is adaptable to both full sun and partial shade, making it a versatile choice for various garden settings.

Pruning Advice

When to Prune: Prune Karl Foerster Moor Grass in late winter or early spring, before new growth begins.

How to Prune: Use sharp secateurs or garden shears to cut the plant back to about 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6 inches) above the ground. Remove any dead or damaged foliage, taking care not to cut into the crown.

Additional Tips:

Leaving the dried flower plumes and foliage standing through winter adds seasonal interest and provides shelter for wildlife.

Divide the plant every 3 to 4 years in early spring to rejuvenate it and maintain its vigour.
