Cotoneaster franchetii Hedge Plants Description

Cotoneaster franchetii is an attractive hedging plant characterised by its sage green leaves with white undersides. In May and June, it produces five-petalled white flowers with a pink tinge, followed by an abundance of deep orange-red, pearl-sized berries in autumn, which are beneficial to birds. This hardy shrub is suitable for a variety of soil types, except very wet soils, and can thrive in conditions ranging from full sun to dense shade.

Pruning should be carried out after the berries have fallen. While Cotoneaster franchetii is evergreen, it may shed some leaves in autumn and occasionally display autumnal colouring. It is well-suited to coastal and exposed sites and has demonstrated effectiveness in reducing pollution in heavily trafficked areas, absorbing 20% more toxins than other hedging varieties due to its dense, evergreen, and hairy foliage.

Pruning Advice

The optimal time to prune Cotoneaster franchetii is after the berries have fallen. Following pruning, the plants benefit from mulching and feeding. Apply either a general-purpose fertiliser or a specialised rose or high-potassium fertiliser for best results.

Further Information

Our recommended planting densities for each size and root type are detailed in the product grid. We advise using these recommendations as a guideline, considering the time frame you are willing to wait for your hedge to mature. As a general reference, bare root plants can be planted at densities ranging from 3 to 7 per metre, while cell-grown plants should be planted between 4 and 6 per metre. Higher densities may require planting in a double staggered row or a zig-zag pattern.
