Leylandii Hedge Plant Description

Green Leylandii, also known as Leyland Cypress, is a popular hedge plant renowned for its excellent qualities and cost-effectiveness in achieving substantial hedge height. With regular clipping in midsummer and autumn, its mid-green, spray-like, citrus-scented foliage can form a magnificent, dense, formal hedge, making it ideal for windbreaks, noise reduction, and privacy.

As the fastest-growing of all conifers, Leylandii can achieve growth rates of up to 90 cm per year under optimal conditions. Although it has the potential to grow very tall, it is important to maintain a reasonable height for ease of upkeep and to ensure good relations with neighbours. With regular trimming, Leylandii can be easily maintained at a height of approximately 5 to 6 feet, making it a manageable and attractive choice for many gardens.

Pruning Advice

Leylandii should be pruned in spring, as soon as the weather warms, although this can be deferred until summer, provided there have been no dry spells and the weather is not excessively hot. Additionally, Leylandii does not regenerate from old wood, so it is essential to avoid allowing it to become overgrown before trimming it back to size.
