Darwins Barberry Hedging Plants Description

Darwins Barberry, a striking variety of Berberis, stands out among other evergreen Berberis species like Berberis stenophylla and Berberis julianae. This plant features dark green, spiky foliage reminiscent of tiny Holly leaves, and produces clusters of orange-yellow flowers on red stems in the spring. Additionally, Berberis darwinii yields blue-purple berries in the autumn and may even have a second bloom of flowers. Known for its vibrant spring colour and formidable prickly leaves, Darwins Barberry is not only visually appealing but also serves as an effective deterrent against intruders, making it a top choice for secure hedging.

Pruning advice

Berberis darwinii is a vigorous grower, potentially reaching heights of up to 3 metres if left unpruned. However, it is easily manageable and can be maintained at approximately 1.5 metres with regular trimming. To maintain its shape, cut back any long branches and tidy the overall form in autumn, after the berries have been consumed or fallen. This species thrives in well-drained soil and can tolerate both full sun and partial shade. Pruning should be conducted immediately following the flowering period.

Further Information

Our recommended planting densities for each size and root type are listed in the product grid. These should be used as a guide when considering the time you are willing to wait for your hedge to achieve its full appearance. As a general indication, bare root plants can be spaced at 3 to 7 per metre, while cell-grown plants can be spaced between 4 and 6 per metre. For higher densities, consider planting in a double staggered row or a zig-zag pattern.
