  • Planting Conditions: Leatherleaf Sedge thrives in well drained soil, adapting to a variety of soil types, including sandy, loamy, and clay soils. While it prefers moderately fertile soil, it is relatively tolerant of poorer soils, provided they drain well. Avoid waterlogged conditions, as this can lead to root rot. The grass grows best in full sun to partial shade. It flourishes in sunnier spots, where the warm copper hues of the foliage are most vibrant, though it can tolerate some shade, particularly in hotter climates where some afternoon shade may be beneficial to protect the foliage from scorching. Once established, Leatherleaf Sedge is fairly drought tolerant, making it suitable for low maintenance, water wise gardens.
  • Growth Rate: Leatherleaf Sedge has a slow to moderate growth rate, gradually forming a compact clump over time.

Leatherleaf Sedge Ornamental Grasses Description

Leatherleaf Sedge is an elegant, evergreen ornamental grass known for its distinctive, leathery textured leaves that add texture and colour to the garden year round. Native to New Zealand, this sedge forms compact, clump like tufts of narrow, arching foliage that start out a rich bronze copper colour, maturing to a warm, golden brown. The striking colour tones of Leatherleaf Sedge create a soft contrast in garden beds, making it an excellent choice for both contemporary and traditional designs, as well as for borders, rock gardens, or containers. With its architectural presence and low maintenance nature, it is an ideal plant for gardeners seeking a sophisticated grass with minimal care requirements.

Pruning Advice

Cut Back in Spring: Leatherleaf Sedge is evergreen but should still be pruned annually to maintain its neat appearance. In early spring, before new growth begins, cut back the dead foliage from the previous year. Trim the plant to a few inches above the ground, removing any old or damaged leaves to promote fresh, healthy growth. This will help to rejuvenate the plant and encourage a tidy, full clump.

Occasional Division: Over time, the plant may become overcrowded, which can hinder its growth. To maintain its vigour and improve its appearance, divide the clump every few years. Early spring is the best time to divide Leatherleaf Sedge, before new growth emerges. When dividing, gently separate the clumps into smaller sections and replant them in a suitable spot in the garden.

Winter Interest: If you prefer, you can leave the dried foliage standing through winter for added texture, as the copper brown leaves often look beautiful when dusted with frost or snow. However, cutting back in early spring will keep the plant looking fresh and tidy.

Further Information

Year Round Interest: As an evergreen plant, Leatherleaf Sedge provides structure, texture, and colour throughout the year. Its rich copper brown foliage is particularly striking in winter when many other plants have faded, adding year round appeal to the garden.

Architectural Elegance: Its fine, arching leaves bring an elegant, soft texture to any planting scheme. It works well in both contemporary designs and more traditional garden styles, offering architectural structure without being overpowering.

Low Maintenance: Once established, Leatherleaf Sedge is relatively easy to care for. It requires little attention beyond occasional pruning and the occasional division to keep the plant healthy and vigorous. It is also relatively drought tolerant and pest resistant.

Versatile Uses: Leatherleaf Sedge is ideal for borders, groundcover, and container planting. It also pairs well with other ornamental grasses, perennials, or shrubs, creating a harmonious and visually interesting landscape. Its compact form makes it particularly suitable for smaller gardens or as a feature in mixed plantings.

Wildlife Friendly: While not known for producing large flowers, Leatherleaf Sedge provides shelter for small wildlife and insects, making it a valuable addition to wildlife gardens or those aiming to encourage biodiversity.
