Planting Conditions: Prefers acidic, well drained, and moisture retentive soil. A pH of 5.5 to 6.5 is ideal. The soil should be rich in organic matter, and it is important to ensure good drainage to prevent waterlogging. If planting in containers, use ericaceous (acidic) compost.
Thrives in partial shade to dappled sunlight. While it can tolerate some morning sun, it should be sheltered from harsh midday sun, as this can scorch the leaves and buds. It is also best protected from strong winds and frost, which can damage the delicate flowers.
Growth Rate: Japanese Camellia has a moderate growth rate, typically growing around 30 to 45 cm (12 to 18 inches) per year, depending on conditions.

Japanese Camellia Italian Plants Description

Japanese Camellia is a graceful and hardy evergreen shrub, renowned for its spectacular winter and spring blooms. Native to Japan, this popular plant offers glossy, dark green leaves and large, vibrant flowers that appear in a wide range of colours, including white, pink, and red, often with subtle variegations or striking patterns. Pruning Advice

When to prune: Prune Japanese Camellias after flowering, in late spring or early summer, to avoid cutting off new flower buds.

How to prune: Remove any dead, damaged, or diseased growth, and trim any crossing or overcrowded branches to maintain a well shaped, open structure. Light pruning can also be done to shape the plant or control its size.

Cutting back: If necessary, you can cut back hard to rejuvenate the shrub, but this should be done gradually over several years to avoid shock.
