Cider Gum Ornamental Tree Description

The Cider Gum, also known as the Gunnii Gum or Blue Gum, is a captivating evergreen tree native to Tasmania. This ornamental tree is prized for its striking appearance, aromatic foliage, and ability to adapt to a variety of conditions. Typically growing to a height of 12–20 metres (39–66 feet), it features a distinctive rounded crown and smooth, mottled bark that peels away in strips, revealing a fresh layer underneath. Its elegant form and vibrant foliage make it a popular choice for gardens, parks, and urban landscapes.

The Cider Gum is known for its lush, rounded leaves that are bright green in colour and emit a pleasant, refreshing aroma when crushed. Young leaves are typically rounded and a silvery-blue hue, while mature leaves become elongated and dark green. In summer, the tree produces clusters of small, white flowers that are highly attractive to bees and other pollinators, adding seasonal interest and supporting local biodiversity. The flowers develop into woody seed capsules, which can remain on the tree for several years, providing further visual appeal.

Pruning Advice

Pruning is an essential practice for maintaining the health and appearance of the Cider Gum. The best time to prune is during late winter or early spring, before new growth begins. During this time, remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches to promote healthy growth and improve air circulation within the canopy.

Light pruning can also be done during the growing season to maintain the desired shape and size. However, avoid excessive pruning, as this can stress the tree and inhibit its natural growth habit. Regular maintenance will help preserve the tree's form and enhance its ornamental qualities.
