Dwarf Porcupine Ornamental Grasses Description

Dwarf Porcupine Grass is a compact and striking ornamental grass that adds texture, structure, and vibrant colour to smaller gardens or borders. This variety features narrow green leaves adorned with bold, horizontal yellow bands, creating a unique porcupine stripe effect. Its upright, clump forming habit makes it a versatile choice for both formal and naturalistic planting schemes.

In late summer to autumn, the grass produces airy, feathery plumes that rise above the foliage. Initially pinkish bronze, these plumes mature to a soft beige, providing added movement and height while remaining attractive into winter. Growing to a manageable height of 90 to 120 cm (3 to 4 feet) and spreading to about 60 to 90 cm (2 to 3 feet), it is perfect for smaller spaces, containers, or mixed borders.

Pruning Advice

When to Prune: Prune in late winter to early spring, just before new growth begins. This timing allows the dried foliage and plumes to provide winter interest and shelter for wildlife.

How to Prune: Use sharp garden shears or secateurs to cut the foliage back to around 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6 inches) from the ground. Remove any dead or damaged material to ensure healthy growth.

Additional Tips:

If the plant becomes too crowded or outgrows its space, divide the clump in early spring to rejuvenate growth and propagate new plants.

Mulch lightly in spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds, but avoid over mulching, as this can trap excess moisture.

Further Information

Compact Size: Its smaller stature makes it ideal for gardens with limited space, as well as for borders, containers, or patio displays.

Year Round Interest: The bold striped foliage and airy plumes provide visual appeal from summer through winter, adding movement and texture to the garden.

Low Maintenance: Once established, this grass requires minimal care and is resistant to pests and diseases.

Wildlife Friendly: The plumes offer shelter for insects and birds, while its winter form provides habitat for garden wildlife.

Versatile Design: Works well in contemporary gardens, cottage gardens, or prairie style planting schemes. It pairs beautifully with flowering perennials and other ornamental grasses.
