Viburnum davidii Shrub

Viburnum davidii is a compact, evergreen shrub prized for its distinctive, glossy, dark green leaves and striking clusters of blue-black berries. Known for its architectural appeal, this shrub produces small, creamy-white flowers in spring, followed by attractive berries in autumn, which persist through winter if both male and female plants are grown. Its neat, mounded form makes it ideal for ground cover, borders, or low hedging, and it thrives in a range of garden conditions.

Benefits:

Evergreen foliage: Viburnum davidii provides year-round interest with its lush, leathery green leaves, which retain their colour even during the winter months, making it a valuable addition for maintaining garden structure.

Attractive berries: If male and female plants are grown together, Viburnum davidii produces clusters of vibrant blue-black berries in autumn, adding seasonal interest and colour throughout the colder months.

Wildlife-friendly: The white flowers attract pollinators like bees in spring, while the berries provide food for birds in autumn and winter, contributing to the biodiversity of your garden.

Low-maintenance: Once established, Viburnum davidii is easy to care for, with minimal pruning needs and strong resistance to pests and diseases.

Shade-tolerant: This shrub thrives in partial to full shade, making it an excellent choice for gardens with less sunlight.

Pruning Advice

Viburnum davidii requires very little pruning, making it a low-maintenance option for gardeners. The best time to prune is in late winter or early spring, just before new growth starts. Remove any dead, damaged, or diseased branches to encourage healthy growth, and lightly shape the shrub to maintain its natural form. Overgrown or leggy plants can be cut back more heavily, but avoid pruning too hard into old wood, as this may hinder regrowth. Regular removal of spent flowers will help maintain a tidy appearance and encourage further berry production.

With its evergreen foliage, striking berries, and minimal care needs, Viburnum davidii is an excellent shrub for adding year-round interest and wildlife value to your garden.

Further Information

Planting distances are largely a matter of preference. For bare root plants, spacing them at 3 plants per meter is sufficient, 5 plants is optimal, and 7 plants in a double staggered row will result in a denser hedge more quickly. Generally, smaller plants should be planted at a higher density. For cell-grown plants, spacing at 4 plants per meter in a single row or ideally 6 plants per meter in a staggered row is recommended.
