Blackthorn Hedge Plant (Prunus spinosa) Description

Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) begins blooming early in spring, with abundant white flowers appearing before the leaves. This provides early seasonal interest. In summer, it features bushy green, oval-shaped foliage and produces sloes in autumn—small, damson-like fruits that can be harvested in November for making sloe gin, provided they are not eaten by birds first.

As a natural security hedge, Blackthorn is dense with thorny foliage which offers effective protection. The plants density provides excellent shelter for birds and wildlife. Blackthorn is a fast-growing hedge, increasing by 40-60 cm annually, and will thrive in most soil types except very water logged conditions. For optimal growth, it should be planted in a sunny location, as it is unsuitable for full shade.

Pruning Advice

Trimming of Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) should be carried out during the plant's dormant winter period, avoiding freezing conditions. For a more natural hedgerow appearance, Blackthorn can be left untrimmed, but it can also be pruned to maintain a desired height and spread.

When pruning, it is essential to wear protective gloves due to the plant's long, sharp thorns, which, while effective as an intruder deterrent, can make the pruning process challenging without proper protection.
