Cotoneaster Simonsii Hedge Plants Description

Cotoneaster simonsii Hedge (Himalayan Cotoneaster) is a versatile and attractive option for hedging, widely appreciated for its dense growth and wildlife-friendly properties.

This deciduous to semi-evergreen shrub has a moderate growth rate, typically growing 20-30cm (8-12 inches) per year, eventually reaching a height of 2-3 metres (6-10 feet).

Leaves: Small, oval-shaped, glossy green leaves turn shades of bronze in the autumn, adding seasonal interest to your garden.

Flowers: In late spring to early summer, Cotoneaster simonsii produces clusters of small white to pale pink flowers that are a magnet for bees and other pollinators.

Berries: Following the flowering period, the plant develops bright red, berry-like fruits, which persist into the winter months and are highly attractive to birds.

Shape: The shrub forms a dense, upright growth habit, perfect for creating privacy screens or informal hedges.

Cotoneaster simonsii is an ideal low-maintenance hedge, as it is tolerant of a wide range of soils and can thrive in both sunny and partially shaded positions. Additionally, it is hardy in the UK climate, withstanding cold winters and requiring minimal pruning to maintain its shape.

This plant is an excellent choice for wildlife-friendly gardens and adds year-round visual appeal.

Pruning Advice

Prune Cotoneaster simonsii in late winter or early spring, before new growth begins. Focus on removing dead, damaged, or overcrowded branches to encourage healthy growth and maintain its shape. Light trimming can also be done after flowering to keep the shrub tidy, but avoid heavy pruning during the growing season to preserve its berries. Additionally, thinning out the centre of the plant improves air circulation, reducing the risk of disease. Regular pruning helps maintain its compact form and encourages vibrant berry production in autumn.

Further Information

The recommended planting densities for pot-grown plants are provided, but this is largely a matter of personal preference. You may choose to increase or decrease the density based on your budget and how quickly you want the hedge to establish. Cell-grown plants should be spaced at 4 per metre in a single row, or ideally 6 per metre in a staggered row for better coverage.
