Zebra Ornamental Grasses Description

Zebra Grass is a striking ornamental grass, valued for its bold foliage and dramatic presence in the garden. It forms an upright, clump shaped mound of narrow, green leaves that are distinctly marked with horizontal yellow bands, resembling the stripes of a zebra. This unique variegation adds vibrant contrast to the landscape, making it a popular choice for both contemporary and traditional garden designs.

In late summer to autumn, Zebra Grass produces feathery flower plumes, initially silvery pink, that mature to a soft, silvery tan. These plumes add height and texture, bringing further interest to the plant. Standing at around 1.5 to 2 metres (5 to 6 feet) tall, including the flowers, Zebra Grass is ideal for creating dramatic focal points, enhancing mixed borders, or adding texture to larger garden spaces.

Pruning Advice

When to Prune: Prune Zebra Grass in late winter or early spring, just before the new growth starts. This allows the dried foliage and flower plumes to add winter interest and provide shelter for wildlife.

How to Prune: Use sharp secateurs or garden shears to cut the plant back to about 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6 inches) above the ground. Remove any dead or damaged foliage, and avoid cutting into the crown of the plant.

Additional Tips:

If the plant becomes too large or overcrowded, divide the clump in early spring before the new growth begins. This will help rejuvenate the plant and keep it manageable.

Mulching in spring can help retain moisture and suppress weeds, but take care not to cover the crown.

Zebra Grass is hardy, but during particularly harsh winters, a light layer of mulch around the base can protect the roots from extreme cold.

Further Information

Striking Appearance: The bold, striped foliage creates a unique visual contrast in the garden, making it a standout feature in borders, large plantings, or as a focal point.

Seasonal Interest: The plant offers interest throughout the year, with its vibrant foliage in spring and summer, followed by attractive flower plumes in late summer and autumn, which persist into winter.

Low Maintenance: Once established, Zebra Grass is relatively low maintenance, resistant to pests and diseases, and requires little more than an annual pruning.

Versatile in Design: Ideal for contemporary gardens, cottage gardens, or large, naturalistic landscapes, Zebra Grass works well with a wide variety of other plants, especially perennials and other grasses.

Wildlife Friendly: The plumes provide shelter for insects and small birds, and its structure helps increase biodiversity in the garden.
