Cotoneaster horizontalis Hedge Plants Description

Cotoneaster horizontalis is a deciduous shrub that is particularly striking in winter. It features a distinctive herringbone pattern of stems, creating a basketweave structure adorned with berries on its dark wood. In spring, its small, tidy leaves do not obscure this structure, and it produces nectar-rich white to pink-tinged flowers, which are followed by red berries in autumn. By November, its foliage turns a vibrant pink-red.

This plant performs well in shaded conditions, though it will produce more flowers and berries if positioned in a sunny location. Cotoneaster horizontalis is exceptionally resilient and can thrive in all but extremely waterlogged soils. It can be pruned at any time, with care, to maintain its characteristic herringbone structure.

Pruning Advice

Cotoneaster horizontalis should be trimmed twice annually: once in early June and again in late September. Proper timing is crucial to avoid removing new growth. After pruning, apply mulch and feed the plants with either a general-purpose fertiliser or a specialised rose or high-potassium fertiliser for optimal health and growth.
