Moorhexe Purple Moor Ornamental Grasses Description

Moorhexe Purple Moor Grass is a compact and elegant ornamental grass, well loved for its seasonal interest and upright growth habit. Forming neat clumps of fine, arching green foliage, it provides structure and texture to borders and naturalistic planting schemes. In late summer, tall, delicate flower spikes emerge, bearing purple tinged blooms that rise gracefully above the foliage. These flowers gradually mature to golden brown and persist well into winter, offering extended visual appeal.

During autumn, the foliage transforms into stunning shades of yellow and bronze, adding warmth and colour to the garden. Growing to around 90 cm (3 feet) in height, with flower spikes reaching up to 1.2 metres (4 feet), Moorhexe is ideal for adding vertical interest without overwhelming smaller spaces. This hardy, low maintenance grass thrives in a variety of conditions and is particularly suited to damp or water side planting.

Pruning Advice

When to Prune: Cut back in late winter or early spring, just before new growth emerges. This timing ensures the plant is ready for fresh growth and prevents damage to new shoots.

How to Prune:

Use sharp secateurs or garden shears to trim the plant down to around 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6 inches) above ground level.

Remove any dead or damaged foliage and flower stems, taking care not to cut into the crown.

Additional Tips:

Allow the dried flower heads to remain through winter for added visual interest and to support wildlife.

Divide the clumps every 3 to 4 years in early spring to rejuvenate the plant and maintain its vigour.

Further Information

Seasonal Interest: Green summer foliage turns brilliant golden yellow and bronze in autumn, while the flower spikes provide a striking display from late summer through winter.

Compact Size: Its manageable height and tidy growth make it suitable for smaller gardens, mixed borders, or container planting.

Wildlife Friendly: The flowers attract pollinators like bees and butterflies, and the seed heads provide food and shelter for birds during colder months.

Low Maintenance: Once established, Moorhexe requires minimal care, making it an excellent choice for low maintenance gardens.

Versatile Aesthetic: Blends beautifully in a variety of settings, from naturalistic meadows to contemporary borders, and pairs well with other perennials and grasses.

Tolerant of Moist Conditions: Thrives in damp areas, making it ideal for planting near ponds, streams, or in rain gardens.
