Lilyturf Ornamental Grasses Description

Lilyturf is a versatile and hardy perennial known for its elegant, grass like foliage and spikes of delicate flowers. This evergreen plant forms dense clumps of narrow, arching leaves, which provide texture and year round interest in the garden. In late summer, Lilyturf produces spikes of purple, lavender, or white flowers, depending on the variety, which are followed by small, dark berries. The plant typically grows to a height of 30 to 45 cm (12 to 18 inches), making it an excellent choice for ground cover, border edging, or as an underplanting for taller shrubs and trees.

Lilyturf is particularly valued for its adaptability, as it thrives in a wide range of conditions, including both sun and partial shade. It is highly tolerant of different soil types, from sandy to clay, and is relatively low maintenance once established. Its evergreen nature ensures it provides structure and greenery throughout the year, even in the winter months.

Pruning Advice

Pruning: Liriope muscari requires minimal pruning. In late winter or early spring, cut back the old foliage to about 5 to 10 cm (2 to 4 inches) above the ground to tidy up the plant and encourage fresh growth for the new season. This helps to remove any dead or damaged leaves and prepares the plant for a full flush of new growth.

Dividing: Over time, Liriope muscari can become crowded and may benefit from division. Every 2 to 3 years, divide the clumps in early spring or autumn to maintain healthy growth and to propagate new plants. Simply dig up the clump, separate the root ball, and replant the divisions in a well prepared soil.

Watering: Water regularly during dry spells, particularly in the first year after planting, to ensure it becomes well established. Once mature, Liriope muscari is fairly drought tolerant.
