Rosemary Hedge Plants Description

Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) is a fragrant, evergreen herb that is increasingly popular as a decorative and functional hedge plant. Known for its aromatic foliage and stunning blue-purple flowers that bloom in spring and early summer, rosemary is a versatile addition to any garden. With its woody stems and dense growth habit, it can be shaped into a formal hedge or allowed to grow more informally, making it suitable for various landscape styles.

Benefits:

Aromatic foliage: The leaves of rosemary emit a delightful fragrance, adding sensory appeal to your garden and making it a wonderful choice for herb gardens or borders.

Culinary use: As a popular culinary herb, rosemary can be harvested for use in cooking, providing fresh flavour to a variety of dishes, particularly meats, soups, and roasted vegetables.

Wildlife-friendly: The flowers attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies, enhancing biodiversity in your garden while providing essential food sources for these beneficial insects.

Drought-resistant: Rosemary is highly drought-tolerant once established, making it an ideal choice for low-maintenance gardens and those in drier climates.

Year-round interest: With its evergreen nature, rosemary provides year-round structure and greenery, contributing to the visual appeal of your garden even in the winter months.

Pruning Advice

To maintain a healthy and well-shaped rosemary hedge, regular pruning is essential. The best time to prune is in early spring, just before the new growth begins. Remove any dead or damaged wood, and lightly trim the plant to encourage bushier growth and to maintain the desired shape. It is advisable to avoid cutting into old, woody stems, as this can hinder regrowth. A light trim after flowering can also help keep the hedge tidy and promote further growth. Regular harvesting of the foliage can also encourage a denser growth habit while providing you with fresh rosemary for culinary use.

With its aromatic leaves, culinary versatility, and ease of maintenance, a rosemary hedge is a fantastic addition to any garden, offering both beauty and practicality.

Further Information

Planting distances are largely a matter of preference. For bare root plants, spacing them at 3 plants per meter is sufficient, 5 plants is optimal, and 7 plants in a double staggered row will result in a denser hedge more quickly. Generally, smaller plants should be planted at a higher density. For cell-grown plants, spacing at 4 plants per meter in a single row or ideally 6 plants per meter in a staggered row is recommended.
