Elijah Blue Fescue Ornamental Grasses Description

Elijah Blue Fescue is a striking, compact ornamental grass that is prized for its vivid silvery blue foliage. This variety of Blue Fescue is particularly renowned for its intense, eye catching colour, which remains vibrant throughout the year, making it a standout feature in any garden. The fine, spiky leaves grow in tight, neat clumps, creating a soft, mound like shape that adds texture and structure to both small and large garden spaces. In late spring to early summer, Elijah Blue Fescue produces slender flower spikes that rise above the foliage, showcasing small, inconspicuous beige flowers, which are mainly ornamental and add subtle contrast to the grass.

This grass is ideal for rock gardens, borders, gravel gardens, and containers. Its compact size and bright colour make it particularly suited to smaller spaces, where it can be used as a striking accent plant or to add visual interest to a mixed planting scheme.

Pruning Advice

Cutting Back: In late winter or early spring, before new growth begins, cut back old, dry leaves to about 5 cm (2 inches) from the base of the plant. This will help tidy up the grass, remove any dead material, and allow fresh growth to emerge. It is important not to prune too early, as this can expose the plant to frost damage.

Deadheading: The flower spikes of Elijah Blue Fescue are not showy and can be removed after flowering to keep the plant looking neat. If desired, leave them for winter interest or to provide seeds for wildlife.

Division: Over time, the clumps of Elijah Blue Fescue may become slightly crowded. To keep the plant vigorous and prevent it from becoming too dense, divide the clumps every 2 to 3 years in early spring or autumn.

General Maintenance: Remove any yellowing or damaged leaves throughout the growing season to maintain its tidy appearance. Ensure the plant receives adequate water during dry spells, particularly in its first year of growth.

Further Information

Vibrant Colour: The striking, silvery blue foliage creates a cool, calming effect in the garden, adding a pop of colour, particularly when combined with warm toned plants and flowers.

Evergreen: As an evergreen grass, it provides year round structure and interest, retaining its vibrant colour throughout the seasons, even in winter.

Low Maintenance: Once established, Elijah Blue Fescue is a low maintenance plant that requires little care, making it perfect for gardeners who prefer an easy to look after plant.

Drought Tolerant: Being quite drought tolerant once established, it is ideal for dry, sunny spots where other plants may struggle.

Wildlife Friendly: While the flowers are not particularly showy, the plant still provides habitat and food for pollinators, such as bees and butterflies, particularly when in bloom.
