Japanese Blood Ornamental Grasses Description

Japanese Blood Grass is a striking ornamental grass prized for its vivid red tipped foliage and elegant, upright growth. Native to Asia, this cultivar is a popular choice for adding bold colour and texture to gardens. The narrow, sword like leaves start green at the base and transition to deep crimson tips as the growing season progresses, with the intensity of the red peaking in late summer and autumn. It forms compact clumps, reaching a height of 30 to 50 cm (12 to 20 inches), making it perfect for borders, rockeries, or container planting.

This grass thrives in sunny positions and provides a dramatic focal point in garden designs, especially when planted in groups or combined with contrasting foliage. Its compact size and low maintenance requirements make it ideal for a variety of settings, from formal gardens to naturalistic landscapes.

Pruning Advice

Winter Cleanup: Japanese Blood Grass is deciduous, so its foliage will die back in late autumn or early winter. Once the leaves turn brown, cut them back to about 5 to 10 cm (2 to 4 inches) above the ground to tidy the plant and prepare it for new growth in spring.

General Maintenance: This grass is low maintenance, but regular watering during dry periods is essential, especially in the first year of planting, to help it establish. Apply a layer of mulch in spring to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.

Division: Over time, the plant may become overcrowded. To rejuvenate it, divide the clumps every 2 to 3 years, ideally in early spring or autumn. Division also helps control its spread and promotes healthier growth.

Further Information

Eye catching Colour: The vibrant red tips of the foliage add bold, dramatic hues to the garden, especially in late summer and autumn. This makes it an excellent choice for creating contrast with other plants.

Low Maintenance: Once established, it requires minimal care, making it suitable for both novice and experienced gardeners.

Compact and Versatile: Its manageable height and clump forming habit make it ideal for borders, rock gardens, and containers. It also works well in mass plantings for a striking effect.

Seasonal Interest: Provides colour and texture throughout the growing season, transitioning from green to vibrant red and adding autumnal tones before dying back in winter.

Wildlife Friendly: Its structure can provide shelter for small insects and garden fauna.
