Eulalia Yakushima Dwarf Ornamental Grasses Description

Eulalia Yakushima Dwarf is a compact, clump forming ornamental grass that is valued for its graceful, arching foliage and delicate, airy flower plumes. The slender green leaves create a dense, mound like structure, providing texture and a soft, flowing appearance in the garden. In late summer to autumn, feathery plumes emerge, initially silvery pink, and mature to soft tan, adding seasonal colour and interest to the plant. With a maximum height of 60 to 90 cm (2 to 3 feet), it is an excellent choice for smaller gardens, containers, or as a border plant.

This variety of Miscanthus offers a striking combination of ornamental appeal and low maintenance care, making it a favourite for gardeners looking for a plant that provides year round beauty with minimal effort. Its compact size also makes it ideal for adding vertical interest in tight spaces, such as along paths, in pots, or in the front of mixed borders.

Pruning Advice

When to Prune: Prune Eulalia Yakushima Dwarf in late winter or early spring, just before the new growth begins to emerge. This allows you to enjoy the winter interest provided by the dried plumes and foliage while preparing the plant for fresh growth.

How to Prune: Using sharp secateurs or garden shears, cut back the plant to around 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6 inches) from the ground. Remove any dead or damaged material, ensuring that the crown of the plant is not disturbed.

Additional Tips:

Division: If the plant becomes overcrowded or if you want to propagate it, divide the clump in early spring before new growth starts.

Mulching: Lightly mulch around the base of the plant in early spring to help retain moisture and suppress weeds, but avoid covering the crown of the plant.

Winter Protection: While it is generally hardy, a light layer of mulch over the roots during harsh winters can provide extra protection.

Further Information

Compact Size: This dwarf variety is perfect for smaller gardens, containers, or the front of borders, providing a bold vertical accent without overwhelming the space.

Year Round Interest: Eulalia Yakushima Dwarf offers interest throughout the year, with vibrant green foliage in spring and summer and soft, decorative plumes in autumn that persist through winter.

Low Maintenance: Once established, it is a hardy and low maintenance plant, requiring little care beyond annual pruning. It is resistant to most pests and diseases.

Versatility: This grass works well in modern, naturalistic, or wildlife friendly gardens and pairs beautifully with other perennials, shrubs, or other grasses.

Wildlife Friendly: The plumes provide shelter for small birds and insects, making it a valuable addition to wildlife friendly gardens.
