Tall Moor Ornamental Grasses Description
Tall Moor Grass is a striking, clump forming ornamental grass that offers both height and elegance in the garden. With its slender, arching green foliage, it forms a graceful mound that moves beautifully in the wind, creating a soft, natural effect. Its distinctive tall flower plumes rise above the foliage in late summer to early autumn, starting as golden brown and maturing to a soft, fluffy tan. These airy flowers provide seasonal interest and continue to look attractive through winter, offering structure to the garden even in the colder months. Reaching a height of 1.5 to 2 metres (5 to 6 feet), Tall Moor Grass is an excellent choice for adding vertical interest to borders, meadows, or wildflower gardens, and works well in naturalistic planting schemes or alongside ponds and streams.
This grass thrives in moist, well drained soils and is tolerant of a range of soil types, from loamy to clay, as long as moisture is retained. While it prefers full sun, Tall Moor Grass can also grow in partial shade, making it a versatile addition to many garden settings.
Pruning Advice
When to Prune: Prune Tall Moor Grass in late winter or early spring, before new growth begins. The dried flower plumes and foliage can be left standing through winter to provide winter interest and shelter for wildlife.
How to Prune: Use sharp secateurs or garden shears to cut the plant back to about 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6 inches) above the ground. Be careful not to cut into the crown of the plant. Remove any dead or damaged material during this process.
Additional Tips:
If the plant becomes too large or overcrowded, divide the clump in early spring before new growth begins. This helps to rejuvenate the plant and maintain its shape.
Tall Moor Grass does not require much fertiliser but can benefit from a light mulch of compost or well rotted manure in spring to encourage healthy growth.
A light layer of mulch around the base can help retain moisture and suppress weeds, but avoid covering the crown of the plant.
