Blue Moor Ornamental Grasses Description

Blue Moor Grass is a charming, compact ornamental grass that adds texture, colour, and year round interest to the garden. Known for its dense, tufted clumps of fine, blue green foliage, this grass offers a soft, graceful presence. In late spring to early summer, it produces delicate, silvery flower spikes that rise above the foliage, creating an elegant contrast and enhancing visual appeal to the garden. As the season progresses, the plant maintains its neat form and continues to provide a structured, refined look throughout the year.

Reaching a height of approximately 30 to 45 cm (12 to 18 inches), Blue Moor Grass is perfect for smaller gardens, borders, rockeries, and containers. Its compact size makes it an ideal plant for edging or groundcover in sunny or partially shaded spots. It is also well suited to naturalistic or meadow style gardens, where its soft form blends beautifully with other plants.

Pruning Advice

Tidy in Early Spring: In late winter or early spring, before new growth begins, remove any dead foliage by gently combing through the plant with your fingers or a rake. This helps to clear away any spent growth and encourages fresh, healthy shoots.

Minimal Pruning Needed: As a semi evergreen grass, Blue Moor Grass requires little maintenance. Simply remove any damaged or dead stems as needed, but avoid cutting the plant back hard, as it can be sensitive to heavy pruning.

Cut Back Flower Stems: After the flowering season, you can cut back spent flower stems to keep the plant looking tidy, although the dried seed heads can also provide winter interest if left intact.

Further Information

Year Round Interest: The blue green foliage adds colour and texture throughout the year, and the delicate flower spikes provide visual interest in late spring to summer. The grass retains much of its foliage during the winter, offering some structure and interest even in colder months.

Low Maintenance: Blue Moor Grass requires minimal care once established. It is drought tolerant and thrives in poor to moderately fertile soil, making it an excellent choice for low maintenance gardens.

Compact Size: With its neat, clump forming habit, it is perfect for small gardens, containers, or as part of mixed plantings in borders. It also works well as a groundcover or edging plant.

Wildlife Friendly: The flowers attract pollinators, such as bees and butterflies, making it a valuable addition to wildlife gardens.

Resilience: Blue Moor Grass is hardy and adaptable, able to tolerate a variety of soil types and conditions, including dry and rocky soils.
