The Mexican Orange Blossom, scientifically known as Choisya ternata, is a distinguished evergreen shrub renowned for its glossy, dark green foliage and fragrant, white star-shaped flowers. Blooming profusely in spring and occasionally in summer, this shrub offers a delightful floral display and aromatic appeal. Its dense, compact growth habit makes it an excellent choice for formal hedges and borders, adding both structure and a touch of elegance to the garden. The plant typically reaches a height and width of approximately 1 to 1.5 metres.

Growth Rate: Choisya ternata exhibits a moderate growth rate, typically expanding by 20 to 30 centimetres per year under optimal conditions. It thrives in well-drained soil and prefers a sunny to partially shaded location. The plant is adaptable to various soil types, although it flourishes best in a fertile, well-drained medium.

Pruning Advice:

Pruning should be carried out in late spring or early summer, following the main flowering period, to preserve the potential for future blooms.

Light Pruning: Regular light pruning is recommended to maintain the shrub’s shape and promote a bushy, dense habit. This involves trimming the tips of new growth and removing any stray or wayward branches.

For rejuvenation or if the shrub becomes excessively leggy, more substantial pruning may be necessary. Cutting back up to one third of the plant’s size during the dormant season will encourage new growth and restore its form.

Planting distances are largely a matter of preference. For bare root plants, spacing them at 3 plants per meter is sufficient, 5 plants is optimal, and 7 plants in a double staggered row will result in a denser hedge more quickly. Generally, smaller plants should be planted at a higher density. For cell-grown plants, spacing at 4 plants per meter in a single row or ideally 6 plants per meter in a staggered row is recommended.
