William's Pear Tree Description

The William's Pear tree, also known as Bartlett in some regions, is a classic and highly popular variety renowned for its large, bell-shaped fruit. The pears have smooth green skin that ripens to a golden yellow and offer a sweet, juicy, and aromatic flavour, making them ideal for eating fresh, cooking, or preserving. The Williams Pear tree is a reliable and productive choice for UK gardens and orchards, with its hardy growth and attractive spring blossoms.

Pruning Advice

Pruning is essential to keep the Williams Pear tree healthy and productive. It is best to prune the tree in late winter when it is dormant. Begin by removing any dead, diseased, or damaged branches, as well as any that cross over or rub against each other.

For a standard tree, focus on creating an open, vase-like shape to allow sunlight and air to reach the centre of the tree, which helps to prevent disease and encourages even fruit ripening. Cut back overly vigorous shoots and thin out crowded branches.

If you're training the tree as an espalier or fan, maintain the shape by shortening lateral shoots during the growing season. Regular summer pruning helps to control growth and directs the tree's energy into fruit production.

Avoid heavy pruning, as pear trees can be slow to recover and may produce fewer fruits the following season if pruned too severely. Additionally, thinning the fruit in early summer, if necessary, can prevent branches from becoming overloaded, ensuring larger, higher-quality pears.
