Variegated Sweet Flag Ornamental Grasses Description

Variegated Sweet Flag (Acorus calamus variegatus) is a striking and low-maintenance ornamental grass that adds texture and colour to a variety of garden settings. Known for its upright, sword-like leaves with green and creamy white stripes, this semi-evergreen plant creates an attractive focal point, particularly in damp or waterlogged areas. Its architectural appearance complements water features, pond edges, and bog gardens, but it is also suitable for borders or damp woodland gardens.

Pruning Advice

Variegated Sweet Flag requires minimal pruning. The plant can be cut back in late winter or early spring, just before new growth begins, to tidy up any dead or damaged leaves and to maintain its neat, clumping shape.

To prevent the plant from becoming too leggy or overgrown, remove any spent or damaged foliage throughout the growing season as needed.

If the plant becomes too large or invasive over time, it can be divided every few years in spring or early autumn to maintain its compact form and encourage fresh growth.

Further Information

Year round interest: The plant has an attractive, variegated foliage, providing texture and colour throughout the year, with the white striping becoming more pronounced in the warmer months.

Wildlife friendly: While the flowers are not particularly showy, the plant can attract beneficial insects and pollinators, especially when placed near water.

Low maintenance: Variegated Sweet Flag is easy to care for, thriving in a variety of conditions and requiring little attention once established.

Versatility: Ideal for damp gardens, pond margins, and boggy areas, it can also be used in containers or as ground cover in wet spots.
