Star Jasmine Hedge Plants Description

Star Jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides) is a beautiful evergreen climber known for its highly fragrant, star-shaped white flowers that bloom throughout summer. With its glossy, dark green leaves that turn bronze in winter, this plant provides year-round interest and a touch of elegance to any garden. Star Jasmine is often used as a climbing plant along walls, fences, or trellises, but it also makes an attractive, low-maintenance hedge when trained and pruned regularly.

The growth rate of Star Jasmine is moderate, with the plant typically growing around 30 to 60 centimetres per year. While it is slower-growing than some climbers, this steady pace allows for easier maintenance and training into a hedge or screen. Star Jasmine thrives in full sun or partial shade and prefers well-drained soil. It is also hardy and can tolerate both heat and cold, making it a versatile choice for a range of garden conditions.

Benefits

Star Jasmine offers several benefits as a hedge plant. Its sweetly scented flowers attract pollinators like bees and butterflies, making it a great addition to wildlife-friendly gardens. Its dense foliage provides excellent coverage for privacy, making it ideal for hedges or screens. Additionally, Star Jasmine is relatively drought-tolerant once established, requiring less frequent watering than many other plants. Its evergreen nature ensures that your hedge remains attractive throughout the year, even in winter.

Pruning Advice

Star Jasmine is easy to maintain with light pruning. It is best to prune once a year, preferably in late winter or early spring, before the new growth begins. Remove any dead or damaged stems and trim back overgrown sections to keep the hedge looking neat and well-shaped. For formal hedges, light trimming throughout the growing season may be required to maintain its desired size and shape.

With its elegant appearance, delightful fragrance, and easy-care nature, Star Jasmine is an excellent choice for a low-maintenance hedge that adds beauty and charm to any outdoor space.

Further Information

Planting distances are largely a matter of preference. For bare root plants, spacing them at 3 plants per metre is sufficient, 5 plants is optimal, and 7 plants in a double staggered row will result in a denser hedge more quickly. Generally, smaller plants should be planted at a higher density. For cell-grown plants, spacing at 4 plants per metre in a single row or ideally 6 plants per metre in a staggered row is recommended.
