Green Privet Hedge Plants Description

Privet hedge plants (Ligustrum ovalifolium) are a classic choice for creating dense, attractive, and versatile hedging. Known for their lush, green foliage and adaptability, Privet hedges are either evergreen or semi-evergreen, depending on the climate, making them a reliable option for year-round interest. In milder winters, they maintain most of their leaves, while in colder regions, they may shed some foliage, only to return vibrant and full in the spring.

Pruning Advice

Privet hedges respond very well to regular pruning, which encourages thick, healthy growth. For a neat, formal hedge, trim two to three times a year, ideally in late spring, midsummer, and early autumn. Avoid cutting back too hard into old wood, as this can hinder regrowth. If you prefer a more informal shape, a light trim once or twice a year is sufficient. Always prune on dry days to avoid spreading diseases, and aim to trim in late winter or early spring before new growth starts.

Further Information

Planting distances are largely a matter of preference. For bare root plants, spacing them at 3 plants per meter is sufficient, 5 plants is optimal, and 7 plants in a double staggered row will result in a denser hedge more quickly. Generally, smaller plants should be planted at a higher density. For cell-grown plants, spacing at 4 plants per meter in a single row or ideally 6 plants per meter in a staggered row is recommended.
