Fuchsia mangellanica Hedge Plants Description

Fuchsia magellanica (Hardy Fuchsia) is a striking, deciduous shrub commonly used for hedging due to its graceful, arching branches and long-lasting flowers. Native to South America, this hardy plant is well-suited to the UK climate and adds vibrant colour to gardens from summer through autumn.

Fuchsia magellanica has a moderate growth rate, typically growing 30-60cm (12-24 inches) per year. It can reach heights of 1.5-3 metres (5-10 feet), making it ideal for medium-sized informal hedges.

Flowers: The most distinctive feature of Fuchsia magellanica is its pendulous, tubular flowers that bloom from early summer through autumn (June to October). The flowers have a unique two-tone appearance, with deep red sepals and contrasting purple or pink petals, creating a striking display. These flowers are highly attractive to pollinators, including bees and hummingbirds.

Foliage: The plant’s small, lance-shaped leaves are deep green, often tinged with red along the edges and stems, adding additional interest to the hedge.

Berries: After flowering, Fuchsia magellanica produces small, dark purple berries, which are edible and provide a source of food for birds.

Shape: This shrub has a naturally bushy, arching form, which can be pruned to maintain a neat shape or left to grow more informally for a softer, more natural hedge.

Pruning Advice

Fuchsia should be pruned in early to mid spring to cut back last years flowering stems. Ensure any weak or dead growth is also removed back to ground level to promote stronger new growth.

Further Information

Planting distances are largely a matter of preference. For bare root plants, spacing them at 3 plants per metre is sufficient, 5 plants is optimal, and 7 plants in a double staggered row will result in a denser hedge more quickly. Generally, smaller plants should be planted at a higher density. For cell-grown plants, spacing at 4 plants per metre in a single row or ideally 6 plants per metre in a staggered row is recommended.
