Hypericum Hidcote Hedge Plants Description

The Hypericum Hidcote, commonly known as St. Johns Wort, is a versatile and vibrant hedge plant, perfect for adding colour and texture to your garden. This semi-evergreen shrub is known for its profusion of bright yellow flowers, which bloom from mid-summer through to autumn. Each flower is star-shaped with prominent stamens, giving it a striking appearance against the dark green, glossy foliage.

Hidcote is relatively low-maintenance, thriving in a range of soils and positions, whether in full sun or partial shade. It is also drought-tolerant once established, making it a great choice for dry or low-maintenance gardens. Pruning Advice

Cut back about one-third of the old wood to shape the hedge and remove dead or damaged stems. For rejuvenation, more severe pruning can be done to promote fresh growth.

Planting distances are largely a matter of preference. For bare root plants, spacing them at 3 plants per metre is sufficient, 5 plants is optimal, and 7 plants in a double staggered row will result in a denser hedge more quickly. Generally, smaller plants should be planted at a higher density. For cell-grown plants, spacing at 4 plants per metre in a single row or ideally 6 plants per metre in a staggered row is recommended.
