Berberis julianae Hedging Plants Description

Wintergreen Barberry, or Berberis julianae, has an upright growth habit and is fast-growing, quickly forming a dense hedge. Its dark green, glossy leaves are complemented by abundant yellow flowers in the spring and black-blue fruits in the autumn. This species thrives in shady areas, including relatively dry shade, and is suitable for coastal conditions, although it does not tolerate wet soil. The average growth rate is about 30 cm per year.

With its long, strong thorns, Berberis julianae is an excellent choice for an intruder-proof hedge while also offering an attractive appearance.

Pruning Advice

Berberis julianae hedge trimming should be done immediately after flowering.

Further Information

Our recommended planting densities for each size and root type are listed in the product grid. These should be used as a guide when considering the time you are willing to wait for your hedge to achieve its full appearance. As a general indication, bare root plants can be spaced at 3 to 7 per metre, while cell-grown plants can be spaced between 4 and 6 per metre. For higher densities, consider planting in a double staggered row or a zig-zag pattern.
